Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood

2022-2026 International Program Overview

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is dedicated to implementing programs of service that enhance the social, economic, and educational well-being of the local, national and international communities. Programs remain the heart of AKA. The size and scope of services provided to our communities have grown and significantly improve the quality of life for all who reside within our service areas.

Service and sisterhood have been the cornerstone of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® since 1908. With the theme, Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood, the 2022-2026 administration seeks to build upon Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s rich legacy of service by galvanizing our sisterhood of more than 120,000 active members to lead on the front lines of change, education, and advocacy.

The six program initiatives for 2022-2026 are:

These initiatives are designed to improve the lives of those we serve. We will work collaboratively to maximize our outreach on progressive endeavors and consistently produce leaders who will advance our credo of service.

Alpha Tau Omega
Local Signature Programs

The Service Programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® consistently take into consideration significant issues at the forefront of our domestic and international communities. The tradition of service locally and internationally are the corner-stone of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® and Alpha Tau Omega Chapter. The foundation of service continues to characterize the commitment of the Sorority and our members to promote life changing events that significantly impact improvements within our local community. Our International organizational leadership establishes the theme, priorities, and direction of the service programs, which are implemented at the local, national and international levels. Danette Anthony Reed, is the International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. The program theme envisioned by our International President for 2022-2026 is Soaring to Greater Heights of Service. The program service initiatives are devoted to continue the Alpha Kappa Alpha mission of “Service to All Mankind.” Alpha Tau Omega Chapter’s community service activities encompass both the international service targets and our local Signature programs.

Mahogany Brain Challenge (MBC)

Mahogany Brain Challenge (MBC) is an African American History competition that allows youth to learn about the many historical contributions that were made by African Americans despite the struggles they encounter. The African American experience is a rich heritage filled with significant contributions to every segment of American society. Alpha Tau Omega Chapter sponsors this annual program in February. San Antonio youth form teams and represent churches, civic organizations and local schools in a competition that energizes Black History Month.

Scholarships

Alpha Tau Omega annually awards scholarships to college bound seniors and students eligible for renewals. Scholarships applications are shared with area school districts in the San Antonio and Bexar County Communities.

Reading Program

Alpha Tau Omega Chapter sponsors a reading program designed to reinforce and enhance reading skills, and students practice making good decisions. The reading committee meets at the Eastside Boys and Girls Club on alternate Thursdays each month and a reading camp is held each summer in the month of June.

Praise Dance Celebrations

Praise Dance Celebrations is an official Fiesta® San Antonio Commission event that is held annually during the Fiesta Celebration. The Praise Dance Celebration brings together church groups of all denominations and ethnicities. The community worships and praised God through dance.

ATO-SOS Volunteers

ATO-SOS Volunteers assist the Alpha Tau Omega-Senior Opportunity Services, Inc. (ATO-SOS) to support and enhance the physical, social, emotional, and economic well-being of senior citizens. ATO-SOS studies the needs of seniors, identifies opportunities and mobilizes resources with the community to assist in satisfying these needs. ATO-SOS volunteers assist the ATO-SOS board in planning and promoting programs, projects and services which will further the agencies general purpose.

Martin Luther King Day of Service

Martin Luther King Day of Service Committee is the celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is no longer referred to as merely a National holiday instead, it is “A Day On, Not A Day Off.” All over the country, people are encouraged to remember Dr. King by performing community service. The MLK Day of Service activities focus is to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, addresses social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved community.” The MLK Committee will host the MLK activities to include the MLK Day of Service, MLK Wreath Laying and MLK March sponsored by the San Antonio MLK Commission and any other MLK activities designated by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Connections

The Connections Committee of Alpha Tau Omega Chapter serves as the chapter’s civic engagement and social justice arm, aligned with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®’s national initiative to Advocate for Social Justice. The committee is committed to keeping members informed, empowered, and engaged in issues that impact our communities locally, statewide, and nationally. Through education, advocacy, and action, the Connections Committee addresses pressing social issues such as voter education and registration, public policy awareness, and civic participation.

Fundraising

Fundraising Committee identify, plan and implement all chapter fundraising activities in collaboration with our non-profit partners to generate the funding needed for Alpha Tau Omega’s community service programs. Past signature fundraising efforts include Juneteenth and Fashionettaᵀᴹ.
